So in the original Mega Man, and only the original Mega Man (and its Wily Wars upgrade), when you defeat a Robot Master, a red orb comes from the ceiling.
Now, it's never said anywhere what those red orbs are... but I think I might have a good idea on what they're meant to be. However, I'm not 100% sure on this, whch is why I'm asking you lot.
See, the original Japanese manual mentions this little tidbit:
The manual explicitly mentions that Mega Man is out to save Dr. Light's robots, as is made more explicit in Mega Man Powered Up. It also mentions "central cores" (a possible early incarnation of the IC chips mentioned in later supplementary material?). Now, that red orb seems to fit that description alright - something you only get from defeating a Robot Master that appears nowhere else in the game? Feels like they're meant to be the "central cores", alright. Not to mention, in an Excuse Plot game like this, it seems odd that the game would end with Mega Man not retrieving the Robot Masters, even if their rescue is not shown onscreen.
Now, two things kinda put this into question: why the orbs come from the ceiling and not from the Robot Master like how power ups drop from enemies, and the refights in Wily's factory. I assume for the former, the developers either couldn't or didn't program it to drop from the boss for some reason, while for the latter, since MM25 specifies the numerous Guts Men in Wily 4 are mass produced copies, I assume that the Robot Masters we face there are also copies, and not the real deals.
But again, I haven't seen any official source out and out say "yes, those orbs are the robots' central cores". So do you think that they are indeed meant to be just that?

Now, in order to stop the 6 robots he had built with his very own hands and to recover each of their central cores, the Doctor has transformed Rock into the fighting robot “Rockman”.
Go! Go! Rockman!! Only you can safely retrieve the 6 robots, then destroy Dr. Wily’s robot factory to restore peace!!
