Hello! This is Otaku the moderator. We had some spambots that blindsided me earlier this year, because they appear to search for terms on this board, then copy/paste a potentially related discussion from another board, but also link to whatever it is they're selling. If you see something like the post below, please Report it so I can handle it. Odds are the next generation will be more subtle, without the big tell from this one, the "I didn't find the right solution from the internet." closing line.
Hello, I'm trying to play Megaman X and X2 on Snes9x but it didn't show any achievements, I'm using the same Megaman X rom that I used before and it doesn't work now. All my games are working OK, looks like the problem is with the Megaman games... Please help I didn't find the right solution from the internet. References: [Links deleted] Thanks |

I'm a little confused, what achievements are you refering to? Like stage completion not graying or fuzzy-screening the beaten stages avatar?

Yeah, the stupid things have been here for a while, copying the text from some random post on some random board somewhere, near as I can tell, and sticking ad links, or whatever they are, at the bottom. It's not as frequent as it was at first, but it's still occasionally happening.

I'm debating leaving this one thread as an example. I also wanted to ask you two... did you report the bot? If you did, and I just missed the notification, I'm sorry. If you didn't, please do so from now on. I'd rather get bombarded with notifications than risk missing it. Since this bot was copy/pasting from other forums and we aren't super strict about linking to discussions that originated elsewhere, I kind of didn't notice it was a spambot until someone finally complained to me. ^^'
Anyway, I've been trying to clean things up a bit as you (hopefully) can tell.

Whereas I assumed if someone saw a spambot I missed, they'd report it.

I'm okay with leaving this up as an example, but I'd change the thread title and move it. Maybe under site rules or something.
And the report button is so whoever is on can deal with it. If you're the only mod, it'd be more efficient to message you about any problem.
If these things are as frequent as mentioned, we may need another mod to help you out.

Kind of wiped from the day/week I've been having, but give me time and I'll figure out where to put it and rename it.
I'm not sure if anyone has used the Report Button here. The short version is... sometimes reporting is more effective, sometimes not. If you'll permit me an imperfect analogy, consider someone with a cell phone just for work and another cell phone for personal matters. It is inappropriate to call the work phone when it is something personal, and it is kind of disappointing when the personal phone is just getting work calls. |

I was speaking from a pure effeciency standpoint, but if you'd rather have it reported, then I'll do that.
At least the spam bots seemed to have slowed down.
